Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda

At 690 metres above sea level, this is one of the most impressive sanctuaries in Portugal, located in the heart of the Peneda–Gerês National Park, in Gavieira. A place of legends and ancient worship, its construction is inspired by the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga. The devotional route starts at the Terreiro do Anjo (Yard of the Angel) and ends at the Pórtico dos Evangelistas (Portico of the Evangelists) which opens onto a large courtyard with former pilgrims’ barracks and the Stairway of the Virtues, which leads to the neoclassical church at the top.
