Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Agonia

Close to the sea and the Lima river, west of the historical centre of Viana do Castelo, we find the huge grounds in front of the Nossa Senhora da Agonia, stage of the most emblematic pilgrimage of the Minho region. The church was built in honour of the patron saint of fishermen, which dates back to the mid 18th century. It was originally a chapel dedicated to Bom Jesus do Santo Sepulcro do Calvário (Good Jesus of the Holy Sepulchre of Calvary). The church is reached by a stairway leading up to a tree-lined courtyard, with benches and a calvary.
