Monte de Santa Luzia

Located on the top of the hill, the sanctuary church is an iconic image of Viana do Castelo and Minho. The project for the construction of the sanctuary dates back to 1898 but the church, designed by the architect Ventura Terra, was only opened to worship in 1926, and was completed only years later. A large churchyard and several landscaped and wooded enclosures surround the church. Since 1923, a funicular has served the sanctuary. To the north are the hotel of Santa Luzia and the ruins of the Citânia (pre-Roman hilltop fort).
