Enclosure of the Monastery of Sanfins de Friestas

This monastery is believed to date back to 604. In 1545, King João III gave it to the Jesuits so that, with its revenue, they could found the College of Coimbra. Located on a hillside above the River Minho, at an altitude of about 200 metres above sea level, it emerges from amongst luxuriant vegetation. Despite the ruined state of the monastic dependencies where the huge Romanesque church, restored in the 1930s, stands out, there is a perfectly perceptible view of the enclosure, with its terraced grounds.
