Sanctuary of Senhor do Socorro
North of Ponte de Lima, after crossing the valley of the Labruja stream, we come across the scenographic façade of the sanctuary church. Begun in 1773, it was the object of a grandiose project by the Brazilian emigrant António Augusto Pereira, who intended to recreate Braga’s Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte. The church is accessed by a stairway lined with statues of angels and is set in a rectangular enclosure accessed by another imposing neoclassical stairway. Other grounds are available, including a set of outdoor ovens.
